If you're planning on coming to London or anywhere in the UK, there are a few things we would recommend you do. Please feel free to contact Sid Kempton if you would like to make any suggestions for things that should be added to this page.

Contact Judd Farris

  •  Apart from being our partner, Judd Farris (www.juddfarris.co.uk) are a fantastic recruitment company that will try their very best to sort you out a job. Whether you are a valuer, an agent, a property manager, a planner, etc, Judd Farris have a large team of experts that will help you out. They recommend that if you are thinking of coming to the UK that you get in touch before you leave.
For temporary and contract roles please contact Ros Ewart (ros.ewart@juddfarris.co.uk ) or Charlotte Holmes (charlotte.holmes@juddfarris.co.uk) and for permanent roles please contact Lucy Ainsworth (lucy.ainsworth@juddfarris.co.uk) on +44 (0)20 7494 2555.

Get qualified

  •  Whether it is becoming a Registered Valuer (NZ), or a Certified Practicing Valuer (Australia), the general consensus amongst  New Zealand and Australian property professionals here in the UK is that coming over here with some qualifications is a huge advantage. Ideally you would do your RICS assessment in your home country. Apparently it is a lot easier than doing it in the UK.

  •  The other part of the equation is getting some experience in your field of work. There is no doubt that the first thing you will hear from the recruitment agencies when you arrive is "you don't have any UK experience". Obviously there is nothing you can do about that until you find your first job, but having the relevant experience in your home country is the next best thing.

  •  Once you are here, you might start to think about getting your MRICS post nominal too. The RICS website has lots of information in their "Careers in Surveying" section.

Get your CV sorted

  •  CV's in the UK are quite a bit different from how people do them in New Zealand and Australia. Here's a few tips from our partner Judd Farris on the key areas to include:

    Profile

You don't have to include a personal profile, but if done well they are always a nice touch.

    Education
Start with your most recent qualification and work your way back to college/high school. Include, name and address of college / university, dates attended, subjects taken and grades achieved.

    Experience
Paint a picture of your professional career, start with your current or most recent position including name of company, start and end dates. Work backwards briefly summarising your roles highlighting areas of responsibility, achievements and successes. A strong career means high profile job roles, blue chip clients and latest technology expertise. If you have these then make the most of them.

    Skills
List all relevant skills i.e. computer courses, Languages.

    Interests
Include professional, personal or community awards, organisation memberships, hobbies and interests. Express yourself as this is a chance to show whom you really are.

    References
Get written references from at least two previous employers before you come to the UK, and ensure that the reference writer is happy to receive an email verifying the authenticity of the written references. Having the references scanned and available would be even better. Alternatively, complete referee details are fine.
